Teeth cleaning is the removal of tartar and dental plaque from teeth to prevent cavities and gum disease. It is part of a complete program of oral hygiene that includes flossing and brushing daily at home.
Regular teeth cleaning by our dental hygienist removes tartar (mineralized plaque) that may develop even with careful brushing and flossing, especially in areas that are difficult for a patient to reach. Our professional cleaning includes tooth scaling and tooth polishing.
Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. During a routine dental exam we check for these signs of gum disease:
• Gum bleeding, swelling, firmness, and spaces between the gum and tooth
• Teeth movement and sensitivity
• Proper teeth alignment
• Receeding Gums
• Bone deterioration
About Gum Disease – Gingevitis and Periodontal Disease
Gum disease, also called gingevitis or periodontal disease, is caused by bacteria in the mouth and build up of plaque. If not properly treated, gum disease can cause tooth loss and other oral problems.
In the early stage of gingivitis, the gums become inflamed and often easily bleed during tooth brushing. Although the gums may be irritated, the teeth are still firmly in place.
When gingivitis is left untreated, it can advance to periodontal disease, where the inner layer of the gum and bone pull away from the teeth to create pockets that can become infected. This infection can spread and grow below the gum line, and break down the bone and tissue that hold teeth in place. When teeth are no longer anchored in place tooth loss occurs.
Preventive Gum Care
Proper gum care includes plaque control through professional cleanings as well as daily brushing and flossing. Brushing eliminates plaque from the surfaces of the teeth, and flossing removes food particles and plaque from in between the teeth and under the gum line.
We can also discuss lifestyle choices that patients can make to reduce the risk of gum disease.
Gum Treatment
Gum care promotes the reattachment of healthy gums to teeth. Gum care reduces gum swelling, the depth of pockets, and the risk of infection. Gum care treatment options depend on the stage of disease, how you responded to previous gum care treatments, and your overall health.
With a local anesthetic, tooth extraction can be a painless procedure.
Tooth extraction is performed for many reasons. Teeth may need to be removed if they are impacted; not erupting normally on their own. Tooth extraction is used to remove seriously damaged teeth, or to reduce dental crowding.
Healing from a tooth extraction usually takes only five to seven days. After seven days the healing is good enough to eat most foods without pain.

Dental implants are replacement teeth that can look and feel just like your own. An artificial tooth root is placed into your jaw and holds a replacement tooth or bridge. Dental implants are an ideal option for people in good general oral health who have lost a tooth or teeth due to gum disease or injury.
Dental implants are natural-looking and feeling, and do not rely on neighboring teeth for support, as does a bridge.

A dental crown is a tooth-shaped “cap” that is placed over a tooth and restores the tooth’s shape and size, strength, and appearance.
When cemented into place, a crown encases the entire visible portion of a tooth. The crown is matched in color to your natural teeth.
A dental crown may be needed in the following situations:
• To protect a weak tooth
• To restore a broken tooth
• To hold a dental bridge in place
• To cosmetically cover mis-shapened or discolored teeth
• To cover a dental implant

In the past, cavities could only be treated with unsightly metal fillings. Today, modern, composite fillings made of durable resin or porcelain are matched to your tooth color, and are bonded to your teeth for a stronger, natural-looking effect. These revolutionary composite fillings are virtually undetectable and are easy to apply. They also prevent further injury to the teeth. top of page
Excessive clenching, grinding, or poor bite alignment can strain your jaw joints or injure your teeth, causing discomfort and, often, severe pain. Dizziness, ear pain, head and neck pain, chewing difficulties, muscle soreness, and even throat pain may surface as the condition worsens.
To correct such problems, we offer a variety of fixed and removable bite appliances, including the NTI appliance. When worn, the NTI prevents teeth from touching one another, ultimately relaxing the jaw muscles and alleviating pain. To learn more about bite appliances, please contact our Blacksburg practice today.
The state of the art technology in radiography are digital x-rays. Digital x-rays reduce the amount of radiation used by 90%. The digital image takes about 10 seconds to appear on the monitor. This larger image can help the patient understand the doctor’s explanations more easily and enables the doctor to zoom in on a specific part of the tooth.
Digital X-rays Are Green
Digital x-rays are environmentally friendly also, because no chemicals are needed for development of the image. top of page
